Smart Action

Configure a Smart Action: voice trigger, transformation instructions, execution engine, output format and sharing.

What is a Smart Action?

A Smart Action is a voice recipe saved in your library. You dictate the trigger keyword (maestro by default) followed by a natural language instruction, and Oriloq selects the existing Smart Action closest to your intent, then executes it. The result is pasted in place of your dictation or copied to the clipboard. Since 1.0.32, built-in actions can be triggered by voice and are available in five languages.

Voice trigger

The default keyword is maestro. You can change it or add variants to handle different wordings (for example "maestro", "hey maestro", "ok maestro"). Oriloq detects the trigger in your dictation, then uses the natural language that follows to find the closest existing Smart Action in your library and execute it.

Prompt and instructions

The prompt defines the transformation to apply to the transcription. Be explicit: specify the expected output format (bullet list, email, JSON, paragraph), the target audience and the tone. Variables such as {{transcript}} are replaced by the transcription at execution time. A built-in editor and an SF Symbols icon picker let you customize each Smart Action.

Execution engine

Choose the engine that runs the prompt: Custom model providers are supported and their validation has been made more reliable (1.0.26).

  • •Gemma 4 (local) — default engine since version 1.0.14, 100% local execution, multimodal (text, images, audio), no data leaves your Mac.
  • •Apple Intelligence — uses the models built into macOS when the device is compatible.
  • •Cloud (optional) — for more powerful models if you have configured a third-party provider.

Hierarchical Smart Action agent

Since version 1.0.14, an intelligent agent can be enabled to automatically discover available Smart Actions and chain them hierarchically. Rather than calling a single action, the agent analyzes your request, selects the relevant actions and executes them in the right order, for smoother automation.

Output format

Each Smart Action can produce:

  • →Plain text — pasted directly into the active application.
  • →Structure — lists, Markdown tables, JSON.
  • →Email — body ready to be sent, with a suggested subject.

A customizable icon appears in the notification produced by each Smart Action to identify the source action at a glance.

Import / Export

Since version 1.0.13, your Smart Actions can be exported in portable JSON format and shared between Macs. Referenced file paths (for example an output folder) are automatically converted to relative paths on export and restored on import. Useful for syncing multiple machines or sharing a library of actions with your team.

Best practices

  • •One Smart Action = one clear objective. Avoid prompts that try to do everything at once.
  • •Always specify the expected output format in the prompt.
  • •Mention the target audience ("for a non-technical recipient", "formal tone", etc.).
  • •Test the Smart Action via the test area on the home screen before triggering it in real conditions.

Privacy

When the local Gemma engine or Apple Intelligence is selected, your transcriptions never leave your Mac. Cloud Smart Actions, if enabled, transmit only the relevant transcription segment to the configured provider, never the raw audio.
